Blackpool is a seaside town in Lancashire, situated on the coast of the Irish Sea. ‘Blackpool’, the name, is believed to have originated from a phenomena caused by a historic drainage channel that flowed over a peat bog, thus releasing discoloured water into the sea and forming a black pool.

By the 19th Century Blackpool was largely known for its Tourist Trade, especially with people from the northern mill towns. The arrival of railway lines in 1846 meant that Blackpool was now very accessible, and inevitably resulted in a boom of visitors. This in turn inspired entrepreneurs to construct hotels, and other accommodations, and entertainment attractions. Blackpool is the only town in the UK with three piers, and is home to the largest opera house outside London. By 1930 Blackpool could happily boast seven million visitors a year!

Today Blackpool’s main trade remains rooted in Tourism. It is still the most popular seaside resort in the UK, although numbers of visitors have dropped over the years.

The town has an impressive list of entertainment venues and complexes, and a huge amusement park, ‘Pleasure Beach Blackpool’. Blackpool has a popular zoo, a sea-life centre, a water park and so much more!

Currently undergoing a grand-scale regeneration project, Blackpool is hoping to revitalise its position within the current tourist industry. Some massive projects are in the planning, including one for ‘Storm City’, an indoor entertainment centre that will sprawl across a 30acre site.

Annually, Blackpool plays host to the internationally renowned ballroom dance competition, the Blackpool Dance Festival.

A random piece of Blackpool trivia for you: Blackpool famously imposed a lifelong ban on the Rolling Stones, in 1964, after a riot broke out during one of their concerts. The ban was lifted an impressive 44 years later, in 2008!!
