Moving to Bolton?

The town of Bolton is historically most famous for an event that took place during the English Civil War (1642-1651) on 28th May 1644. Royalist forces overtook the town killing 1,600 in the process, and capturing a further 700. This event became known as the ‘Bolton Massacre’.

The town was originally located in Lancashire, but is now a part of what is known as the Greater Manchester area, at the edge of the West Pennine Moors. This is cause for some upset for many ‘Boltonians’ who believe that they should never have left Lancashire and lobby for a return to the county. An ongoing affair!

During the Industrial Revolution Bolton made a world-recognised name for itself in textiles, especially in cotton spinning. After World War II the industry went into a decline, and had pretty much died out completely by 1980.

The town has a number of listed buildings, including Grade I listed ‘Smithills Hall’, a rather beautiful building that dates back to the 14th Century, and is now a museum. There are several theatres to be found in Bolton, along with a well-respected art gallery, and one of the oldest public libraries in England, established 1853.

Due to its proximity to the moors many hikers come to Bolton, and also history lovers and archaeologists, due to the abundance of ancient history that can be found in the surrounding moors, including, the Cheetham Close stone circle, which sadly was largely destroyed by a farmer with his sledgehammer! Bronze Age burial grounds can be explored nearby on Winter Hill.

The Bolton Wanderers F.C was formed in 1874, and has notably won four FA cups! The most recent one being in 1958!

Bolton is a friendly town with much to satisfy a variety of interests. It also has some fabulous shops and restaurants. Overall, a great place!
