Bournemouth is located on a wonderful stretch of coastline in the county of Dorset. It neighbours some of England’s most spectacular areas of natural beauty, including the New Forest and the Jurassic Coast: the latter now being a World Heritage Site.

A relatively young town, it wasn’t until 1811 that an entrepreneurial fellow, named Lewis Tregonwell, had a vision and built a collection of holiday villas on what had been, until that point, a rather lonely and barren heathland. Thus the trend was started and Bournemouth continues today to be a highly popular destination for holidaymakers.

Bournemouth attracts people from all walks of life and of all ages, and for good reason; it is a bustling, vibrant, colourful and cosmopolitan town offering a plethora of activities in all genres of interest. It is well respected and much appreciated for its culture, leisure, entertainment and recreational activities. It is home to a large retirement contingency, attracted to the town for its seaside lifestyle and clement climate. It is also the location for the well-reputed University of Bournemouth, specialising in the arts, design and media.

J.R.R. Tolkein holidayed in Bournemouth for a period of thirty years, always choosing to stay in the same hotel. He eventually retired to the town, in the 1960s, and remained there until his death. The grave of gothic novelist, Mary Shelley, famous for her novel, ‘Frankenstein’, can also be found here. Buried nearby is the heart of her husband, Percy Bysshe Shelley. The above are just a few examples of quite a prolific and impressive literary history. Obviously an inspirational area!
