Moving to Brighton?
Brighton and Hove, located in East Sussex on the coast of England, merged in 1997
to form what then became, (in 2000, during the millennium celebrations), the City
of Brighton and Hove. Brighton is the main hub of the city.
The arrival of the railway in 1841 meant that Brighton and its beaches were within
easy reach for day-trippers coming from London. This inevitably caused a massive
boom. It was during the Victorian era that most of Brighton’s major landmarks were
built, including, the Palace Pier in 1899, the West Pier in 1866, which, having
been closed since 1975 as a result of deterioration, awaits renovation. The most
famous, probably, of all the city’s buildings is the Royal Pavilion. A thoroughly
fabulous building noted for its Indo-Saracenic (or Indo-Gothic) exterior and Oriental
interior; it was constructed in the early 19th Century, as a royal palace for Prince
Regent.
Unsurprisingly Brighton’s main trade is in tourism, with its many attractions, entertainment
venues and recreational activities, not least, its beach! The eastern end of the
beach has recently (2007) been opened as a sports complex, and here you can do many
beach-oriented activities, ranging from extreme frisbee to beach-volleyball. The
city has a plethora of clubs, bars, restaurants, wine bars, cafes, and, believe
it or not, over 300 pubs! There is a large student population living in and around
the city, due to it being the location for two highly popular universities, and
some other higher education institutions.
Brighton plays host to some great annual festivals. The Brighton Festival is the
largest arts-based festival in the UK after Edinburgh. The Brighton Festival Fringe
is the second largest fringe festival in the world! The Brighton Pride is also held
annually, in celebration of the lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender (LGBT) community
within and around the city.
The city also has a great sports culture, with the Sussex County Cricket Club being
based here, alongside football, rugby, and more! The world’s oldest motor race,
the Brighton Speed Trials, is held here, and there is also a horseracing track,
greyhound racing, and so much more! There is so much going on in this great city,
that it is hard to fit it all in! Impossible to get bored with all the retail therapy,
eateries, entertainment, and recreational activities one can find here………and it
doesn’t stop there!
