Moving to Bristol?
The city of Bristol is located in southwest England. It wraps itself around the
River Avon, but also has a relatively short coastline on the Severn Estuary, which
flows into Bristol Channel. Bristol is an interesting city with a long and prolific
history. Evidence of human activity dating from the Palaeolithic era has been discovered
in the area around Bristol. As a major seaport, it has a long nautical history,
especially in trading commodities, such as wine, fish, tobacco etc. Nowadays Bristol’s
major imports are; grain, timber, motor vehicles, petroleum products and fresh produce.
One of Bristol’s most notable features is its rather bizarre dialect, spoken by
a few of its native people. Colloquially known as ‘Bristolian’, or even more so,
‘Bristle’ or ‘Brizzle’. It is actually a ‘rhotic’ accent, and rather odd! Its nuances
include, pronouncing the ‘r’ on the end of words such as ‘far’, and words ending
in ‘a’ or ‘o’ are given a rather gratuitous ‘l’ on the end, for example, ‘arena’
becomes ‘arenal’.
Aside from its accent, Bristol was ranked, in 2008, the UK’s most sustainable city,
due to its attention and performance towards environmental issues, such as climate
change, recycling, biodiversity, quality of life etc.
Famous for its music and film industries, the city was awarded the UK’s most musical
city, by ‘PRS for Music’, in 2010.
Bristol is also to a very popular university, the University of Bristol. The university
has seen its fair share of famous graduates, including, Matt Lucas and David Walliams,
Derren Brown – the illusionist, Simon Pegg, to name just a few: As has the Bristol
Old Vic Theatre School, with some of its famous students being, Patrick Stewart,
Greta Scaatchi, Pete Postlethwaite and Jeremy Irons.
Bristol is an exciting and innovative city, and a great place to live. There are
many events and activities held throughout the year, and museums, art galleries,
theatres and more to enjoy at your leisure. The city has something for everyone,
and one even has an accent to learn, too!
