The city of Cambridge is a university town in East Anglia. It was granted city status in 1951 despite not having a cathedral, as it falls within the Church of England’s Diocese of Ely. It lies in the heart of the high-technology centre known as Silicon Fen – an obvious play on the Californian ‘Silicon Valley’ and it being located at the south of Fenland.

This area is home to many high-technology businesses and is considered to be one of the important high-technology centres in Europe.

The area’s history dates back to since before the Roman Empire, but the city is most famous for its university – the University of Cambridge. It is one of the most important universities in the world! The university was originally formed in 1209 as a result of students from Oxford fleeing the hostile townsfolk! The oldest college that still survives, Peterhouse College, was founded in 1284.

The 1960s and 1970s saw Cambridge increase in size massively and rapidly thanks to the development of several large council estates, which were intended to take the overspill from nearby London.

Culturally there is a lot going on in the city to satisfy everyone’s individual needs – theatre, galleries, and some great festivals. Festivals include, the ‘Midsummer Fair’, which is actually one of the oldest fairs in the UK, and possibly even was once the largest medieval fair in Europe. The ‘Cambridge Folk Festival’ is one of the largest folk festivals in the UK, and the ‘Cambridge Film Festival’ is considered to be the UK’s finest.

The city played an interesting central role in the invention of football, as we know it today. In 1884 members of the university drew up the first ever set of the game’s rules! Another piece of random Cambridge trivia is that the band ‘Pink Floyd’ originated here! Syd Barret was born and lived in Cambridge – and met other band members at school here.

There is much to do in this city, and some great exploring to be had, some of the city’s architecture is truly magnificent; it really is a great place to be!
