Moving to Chichester?

Chichester is an ancient and rather romantic cathedral city in West Sussex. It proudly boasts some of the oldest churches and buildings in Britain, the cathedral itself being 12th century. There is a large Conservation Area in the city and many of the buildings are listed, Grades 1 and 11, due to their architectural and historical importance. Chichester has a long and colourful history: Its Roman influence is obvious, not least in the cross-shaped layout of its streets; parts of the city walls are still standing, and the remains of an amphitheatre, buried under a park, can be visited just outside the city. It was also an important site during the Anglo-Saxon era. Information is readily available throughout the city giving detailed maps and explanations on sites of historical relevance.

It isn’t surprising, given the city’s prolific history, that the University of Chichester is known for its academic focus, especially in the arts. Chichester is the cultural seat of the region and hosts a number of festivals and exhibitions throughout the year. A three-week arts and music festival is held in July. A popular festival its itinerary includes world-class music, comedy, exhibitions, and much more.

The Chichester Festival Theatre is extremely prestigious: During its annual summer season a great number of West End theatre writers, directors, and actors come to perform and create.

A couple of miles outside the city the largest outside blues festival can be found at the wonderfully named, Pump Bottom Farm. The festival is simply and aptly titled, ‘Blues on the Farm’, and hosts many of the top national and international names in the blues world.

Overall Chichester is not only an architecturally and historically interesting place to live, it is also cultural and fun, with many events and activities to occupy, and involve, oneself with, throughout the year.
