Coventry is the ninth largest city in England and located in the West Midlands. It is an ancient site with solid evidence that the city grew from a Bronze Age settlement. It claimed city status in 1345, using ‘ancient prescriptive usage’ which basically means, a ‘time before legal history and beyond legal memory’, and was then granted a Royal Charter, which were used to grant legal city status.

Coventry was ‘twinned’ with Stalingrad (Volgograd) during the Second World War, making it the first twinned city in the world! The city is now also ‘twinned’ with Dresden, and 27 other cites worldwide!! The Luftwaffe air raid, Coventry Blitz took place on 14th November 1940. Obviously it was an area of important industry with an aero-engine plant, etc, but some believed that Hitler targeted the city in revenge on the bombing of Munich by the RAF. He chose Coventry because the city’s medieval ‘heart’ was considered to be one of the most splendid in England. The bombing tragically destroyed the ancient cathedral, as well as many thousands of houses. In 1962 the cathedral was rebuilt, making it one of the newer cathedrals in the world.

Interestingly two of our common phrases are believed to have originated in Coventry; ‘peeping tom’, and ‘sent to Coventry’. The former is believed to have originated in the 11th Century when Lady Godiva famously rode naked on horseback through the city, in protest of high taxes imposed by her husband on the cityfolk. Residents were ordered to avert their heads, but one cheeky man couldn’t resist, and as legend goes, was struck blind; ‘Peeping Tom’!! The weekend long, free music festival ‘Godiva Festival’ is named after Lady Godiva, and held in the War Memorial Park. Being ‘sent to Coventry’ is reputed to have originated during the English Civil War (1642-1651), when Royalist prisoners in Coventry were looked after, but never spoken to by the people of the city.

Coventry is historically rich, but also is home to many fantastic theatres, music venues, art centres and galleries, and also to two popular universities. It is also an excellent place to shop! A cultural experience on many levels!
