Moving to Derby?

Derby is a city in the East Midlands, located on the banks of the River Derwent, in the county of Derbyshire. Derby was awarded city status in 1977, during Queen Elizabeth II’s Silver Jubilee celebrations. Prior to that Derby was one of the few towns left with a cathedral but without city status. The cathedral is 212ft tall, and since 2006 has been home to a pair of nesting peregrine falcons.

Derby and Derbyshire were sites of significance during the Industrial Revolutions, a lot went on here in terms of innovative industry. In 1717 the first water powered silk mill in Britain was built in Derby. One of the creators, John Lombe, was believed to have stolen the secrets of silk throwing from Piedmont (which is now a part of Italy). In 1722 Lombe was allegedly poisoned, by some Piedmontese, in revenge of his theft! Another famous 18th Century character with close connections to the city was Dr.Johnson, who created the Dictionary of the English Language, published in 1755, after nine years hard work!

In 1840 Derby was the first city to have an arboretum created in one of its many recreational parks. This arboretum claims to have been the inspiration for many of the great US urban parks, including Central Park in New York!

Derby is also home to a number of museums, theatres, galleries, and many restaurants, bars, clubs, pubs etc.

Darley Park is the venue for one of the largest open-air free concerts of its kind in the UK. The Derby Jazz group is considered by many to be one of the UK’s leading live jazz organisations. Jazz nights in and around the city are a regular occurrence.

In late July, ‘Prom in the Park’ – a rock festival – takes place in Derby.

Interestingly Derby is also home to a large deaf population (second only to London, in numbers). It has a strong sign language community and the Royal School for the Deaf is located here. It is considered to be a cultural city for the deaf community in the UK.

Derby is a cultural and happening city, and a great place to call home.
