Moving to Dudley?

Dudley is a large town in the West Midlands. It is the second largest town in the UK, after Reading, and the largest settlement without its own university!

The area dates back to medieval times. Dudley Castle stands proudly on a hill, overlooking the town. It has been built and rebuilt many times over the years, but the original castle was constructed sometime in the 11th Century. The romantic ruins that stand there now are 13th Century. The castle is mentioned in the Domesday Book, and was certainly the centre around which the town developed.

Dudley expanded rapidly during the Industrial Revolution. Its heavy and highly polluting industries meant that it became a part of the Black Country; known as such due to the black soot that the industries produced that liberally covered everything and filled the sky. Dudley’s main industries at this time were coal and limestone mining, but also in textiles, steel, iron, engineering, glass cutting and more. Nowadays most of these industries have declined, some of them only fairly recently.

In September 2002 the largest earthquake to hit the UK for over 12 years occurred around Dudley, hence being named, the ‘Dudley Earthquake’. It rated 4.7 on the Richter scale, but fortunately there were no casualties and only minor structural damage was caused.

Dudley has a network of canals in and around the town. These are very popular with walkers, narrowboat users, fishermen and cyclists; indeed sections of them are part of the National Cycle Network. The Wren’s Nest National Nature Reserve is a site of significant scientific interest and is largely considered to be one of the most important geological locations in the British Isles. A place well worth visiting!

Dudley Zoo is located in the grounds of Dudley Castle. It is currently undergoing a massive revamp, and will be fantastic in its completion. A charming town with a much to offer, Dudley is a lovely place to live, work and play!
