Dundee is Scotland’s fourth largest city. It is situated on the north bank of the Firth of Tay, which flows into the North Sea. ‘Dundee’, the name, consists of two parts: ‘Dun’ is a Celtic place-name, meaning ‘fort’. The second part is a little more enigmatic and possibly derives from the Gaelic ‘deagh’, meaning ‘fire’ or simply, from ‘Tay’.

As a result of the jute being significantly cheaper to process on the Indian Subcontinent, rather than in Dundee, the industry went into decline during the 20th Century. Dundee was also known for its marmalade – Keiller’s Marmalade – and publishing firm, DC Thompson and Co. This led to Dundee being said to have been built on the ‘three J’s’: Jute, Jam and Journalism!

The city has a large student population, it houses around 17,000 of them due to it being the location for two popular universities. It is also home to some internationally renowned theatres, galleries, and festivals, too!
