Moving to Eastbourne?
Eastbourne is a large town in East Sussex, on the South Coast. It lies at the eastern
end of the South Downs, next to the infamous Beachy Head cliffs. Beachy Head is
the highest chalk sea-cliff in the UK, rising up to 162metres above sea level. This
height has made it one of the most notorious suicide spots in the world!!
1849 brought the railway line to Eastbourne, and inevitably the town grew rapidly
as a result. It fast became established as a popular Victorian seaside resort thanks
to its rather lovely beaches.
In 1859 Henry Currey (an English architect) was commissioned to design a new town
plan, and hence Eastbourne was said to be a resort built “for gentlemen by gentlemen”.
The town has subsequently seen many changes, especially after the Second World War
bombings, which saw many Victorian and Edwardian buildings being destroyed. There
is an ongoing project to regenerate Eastbourne, including plans for a new town centre.
Obviously the main trade for the town is in tourism. Holding the record for the
highest level of sunshine in a month, the town deservedly promotes itself as ‘The
Sunshine Coast’! It is also a popular place for business conferences, and a very
popular destination for foreign language students to come and study.
Eastbourne has a strong sports culture going on. It is the location for the International
Women’s Open, traditionally considered to be the warm-up to Wimbledon. Other sports
include, football, cricket, rugby and lacrosse, and more. Each year, at the eastern
end of the seafront, an extreme sports festival is held. Excellent fun! Due to its
4miles of shingle beach there is an abundance of water recreational activities,
including scuba diving, boating, windsurfing etc. The seafront mainly consists of
guest accommodation building, some are small guesthouse and others are grand hotels.
Throughout the summer many music events take place on the seafront, including, Rock
‘n’ Roll nights, Big Band concerts, Tribute band nights and much more besides!
Eastbourne is an active and fun place to call home. You would be hard-pushed to
get bored in this town!
