Moving to Exeter?

Exeter is the historic county town of Devon, situated on the River Exe. Once a beautiful city, second only to Bath, it was practically flattened after a series of 18 bomb raids during the Second World War, between 1940 and 1942. Sadly, little effort was made to preserve Exeter’s historical heritage, and much of it was lost.

Due to its fertile lands, and with the close proximity of the abundant River Exe, Exeter has been an area of settlement throughout the ages: Coins have been found that date as far back as the Hellenistic period. During Roman times, Exeter was the most south westerly of their fortified settlements. Exeter’s history lesson does not stop there however, with influences and extensive activity from; Saxon times, Medieval times, Tudor and Stuart times, and Georgian and Victorian times. The vaults of the cathedral hold a very precious prize, ‘The Exeter Book’; the most important documents in Anglo-Saxon literature, which date back to the 10th Century.

Exeter not only has a well established and popular University, it is also home to an international airport, with an interesting history in aviation. Exeter Airport was first built in the 1930s, and was officially opened in 1938. The first ‘Great Devon Air Race’ was flown from here in 1937. The airport currently serves mostly European countries, but also offers long haul flights to Canada, which it has done for over 21 years, rather surprisingly!

There are two festivals held in Exeter, arts festivals, but concentrating mainly on music. ‘Vibraphonic’ is an annual event, held for a two-week period in March. An eclectic festival it offers music from a wide variety of genres: funk, reggae, jazz, blues, soul and more. Since 2002 the ‘Respect Festival’ has been held in Exeter, its purpose, fundamentally, is to promote cultural acceptance and stop discrimination. Exeter is a great town in which to settle with a friendly and vibrant community.
