Moving to Hull?
Kingston Upon Hull is a city in the ceremonial county of the East Riding of Yorkshire.
It is situated on the north bank of the Humber estuary, at the mouth of the estuaries
tributary, the River Hull. Locals are known as ‘Hullensians’ and the city is largely
known, quite simply, as Hull.
In 1151 a Cistercian Abbey was founded in the area – Meaux Abbey – the monks from
the Abbey wanted to call the town Wyke Upon Hull, although the locals insisted on
referring to it as Hull, in reference to the river that was their main trade source.
In 1293 King Edward 1 bought the Abbey and in 1293 he granted a royal charter, which
renamed the town, King’s Town Upon Hull, or Hull.
Hull was second only to London in the intensity of the bombing it suffered during
World War 2. Most of its city centre was destroyed. Re-building continues today,
in fact, Hull is still a growing and developing city, making it an exciting place
to be, with many opportunities. Hull is home to a World Trade Centre, a very recent
acquisition to the city, it offers a service for UK based organisations to expand
internationally.
The Youth Enterprise Partnership, based in Hull, is a fantastic organisation that
helps and supports entrepreneurial young folk. The city also has a number of shopping
malls, the biggest being St.Stephen’s, which has all the most popular retail shops
including, Topshop, Oasis, Starbucks etc.
Home to a number of higher education institutions, which includes the University
of Hull, the city can offer higher education in medicine, theatre, the arts, and
more.
Culturally the city has much to offer in way of theatres, museums, galleries etc.
It has a fabulous classical music scene, and is also hosts some respected and popular
festivals. The ‘Freedom Festival’, which started in 2008, is an interesting and
innovative free festival that celebrates freedom, in every sense of the word and
in all possible forms, with live music and arts.
Hull is an exciting city with so much to offer. A great place to live
and work.
