Leicester is one of the oldest cities in England and can be found in the East Midlands, on the River Soar; and has the National Forest right on its doorstep! Its history dates back at least 2000 years! It was one of the largest trading towns during the Roman Empire, when it was then known as ‘Ratae Corieltauvorum’. It also was a place of significant importance during medieval times; it was mentioned in the ‘Domesday Book’ as a ‘civitas’ (city), however, it lost its city status in the 11th Century, during the power struggles between the aristocracy and the church. Leicester was re-established as a city in 1919, and became a cathedral city in 1927, when the Church of St.Martin was upgraded to cathedral status, Leicester Cathedral.

It really is a very multi-cultural city with strong ethnic roots and ethnic pride. It actually has an immigrant population of around 40%. The ‘Golden Mile’ is a stretch of Belgrave Road, which is well known for its authentic Indian restaurants and sari shops. A huge Diwali celebration is also focused around this area each year.

Leicester Market is the largest outdoor covered market in Europe! It is a busy, loud and must-see market! Every year it is the venue for cultural festivals that are organised by the Leicester City Council.

A large ‘Pride Parade’ is held annually in the city, aptly, and obviously, named ‘Leicester Pride’! Leicester also hosts the largest Caribbean festival in the UK, outside London. ‘Leicester Comedy Festival’ is the largest comedy festival in the UK, and has a worldwide reputation.

Leicester is also home to two popular and highly rated universities, many theatres, art galleries, museums, music venues and much, much more!
