Moving to Liverpool?

Liverpool is a city located along the eastern side of the Merseyside Estuary. It scrawls along an impressive sandstone ridge that rises in places to 230ft above sea level. Liverpool was granted city status in 1880, and is the fourth largest city in the UK. Inhabitants of Liverpool are commonly known as ‘Liverpudlians’, but even more commonly referred to as ‘Scousers’ – which originates from a popular dish, a form of stew, called ‘scouse’. The word ‘scouse’ is now totally synonymous with Liverpool, especially in terms of its distinctive accent and dialect.

The city grew originally due it being a major port. Indeed by the early 19th Century 40% of the world’s trade was passing through Liverpool’s port! As a result of this Liverpool grew rapidly, and grandly, especially around the port area, and many a splendid building can be found here. The English Heritage has named Liverpool to be England’s finest Victorian City. In 2004 several areas were listed as UNESCO World Heritage Sites. The city is also home to two cathedrals, one of which is the fifth largest in the world, the Anglican Cathedral, gothic and imposing it is also the largest in England!

A diverse and multi-cultural city, it is home to the oldest Black African Community (since 1730s) and Europe’s oldest Chinese Community. Liverpool can boast many things, and not least its impressive collection of world-class art galleries and museums, of which it has more than any other city in the UK, outside London! Also home to two nationally, and internationally, well-loved football clubs, Everton and Liverpool FC!

Then of course, there is the music!! Most notably, The Beatles! The largest free music festival in Europe, the ‘Mathew Street Festival’ brings thousands of people and bands from all over the world, including many Beatles tribute bands. Liverpool has the oldest surviving classical orchestra on its list of impressive features! The Royal Liverpool Philharmonic Orchestra holds a high international reputation.

There is much to say about Liverpool! There are so many opportunities here, and with so much on offer, culturally especially, it would be hard to get bored of this city! A fabulous city in which to live, work or study!
