Moving to Manchester?
The city of Manchester has for many years been regarded to be the UK’s unofficial second city, and it really does deserve that reputation wholeheartedly! It is located in the south central region of the Northwest of England, with the Cheshire Plain to its south, and the Pennines to its north and its east. Some fantastic trekking to be had within easy reach of the city.
Manchester was a manorial township for most of the Middle Ages. It boomed massively and at an incredible rate during the Industrial Revolution when it created many industries. Its most renowned industry at this time was textile manufacture, and for quite a while the city was the most prolific centre for cotton processing. Later it became the world’s biggest marketplace for cotton products. Not surprisingly, during the Victoria era, the city was nicknamed, ‘Cottonopolis’. In Australia, South Africa and New Zealand, the term ‘manchester’ is still used in reference to household linen; sheets, pillowcases, towels etc!
The city has undergone many changes over the years, with large sections of the city having been demolished and then redeveloped, or modernised (using steel and glass). The use of red brick characterises the city and is a real trademark. Many landmarks dot the skyline, including Beetham Tower, which, at 169m tall and with 47 storeys, is the tallest building outside London, and the highest residential accommodation in Western Europe!
Manchester has a well respected and, quite frankly, amazing music scene. Many famous bands have their roots in Manchester! The city is also home to the largest indoor arena in Europe, and the busiest in the world, the Manchester Evening News Arena.
Also home to many wonderful museums, art galleries, theatres, opera houses, nightclubs,
restaurants, and so much more!
We mustn’t forget the football! Manchester City and Manchester United, are internationally
renowned football clubs with high profile players.
The City of Manchester is a multi-cultural and vibrant city with so much on offer,
there just isn’t room to write it all down in this article!
