Moving to Middlesborough?

Middlesborough is a town in the Tees Valley conurbation in North Yorkshire. It sits on the banks of the River Tees and is lucky enough to be just a few miles from one of the largest heather moorland areas in the UK, found in the North Yorkshire Moors National Park.

It was during the second half of the 19th Century that Middlesborough really started to establish itself as a town of importance. Prior to that, in 1801, Middlesborough had a grand population of 25 people living in a paltry four farmhouses!! In 1829 a group of Quaker businessmen came to the area and saw the potential for Middlesborough to establish itself as a port, for the transport of northeast coal. It was these entrepreneurial businessmen that created an incredible growth, actually unrivalled by any other town in England!

Between 1840-1842 Middlesborough Dock was built. Engineered by George Turnbull – the civil engineer. When William Ewart Gladstone (four times Prime Minister) visited Middlesborough he famously quipped that the town was ‘an infant Hercules’ in ‘England’s enterprise’. In 1850 ironstone was discovered in the Eston Hills and the boom continued ever more strongly; The world price for steel and iron was set by Teesside for years as a result of its abundance in the industries. The Sydney Harbour Bridge has ‘made in Middlesborough’ stamped on it! This is due to its steel components being engineered and assembled by a man who hailed from the town, Dorman Long.

In 1992 the town became home to the Teesside University, which holds international renown for its computer animation and games design. It actually hosts part of the annual ‘Animex International Festival of Animation’.

Culturally the town rather surprisingly has much to offer! There are many architectural landmarks, all of which have an interesting historical and personal story to tell. In 2007 the Middlesborough Institute of Modern Art was opened. It is home to the second largest Picasso collection in the UK, and can also boast pieces by Damien Hirst, Andy Warhol and Henri Matisse.

The town is presently undergoing a big regeneration, and will see the development and creation of many exciting projects.
