Moving to Milton Keynes?

Milton Keynes is a large ‘new’ town located in north Buckinghamshire, in southeast England. In the 1960s Buckinghamshire was allocated to be the site for a new town, or city. The purpose for this new town, or city, was to relieve housing congestion in London and to eventually become a major regional centre in its own right.

The name, ‘Milton Keynes’ came from a village of the same name that already existed on the designated site.

Milton Keynes has an interesting design and architectural history. The layout design was a sharp removal from the previously recognised ‘English New Town Tradition’, and instead used a radical grid design that was inspired by the Californian urban theorist, Melvin.M.Webber. Derek Walker, the young and charismatic founding architect for the town, called Webber the “father of the city”. It certainly transpires that Webber’s ideas and theories were far reaching and have shown themselves to be extremely successful. The scale, plan and vision of Milton Keynes attracted international attention. Milton Keynes has been a successful ‘new town’, proving itself in its adaptability, flexibility and standing proud to the test of time, and a certain amount of criticism! Written into the original Development Corporation design was the idea that the area be a “forest city”. The foresters in the area planted millions of trees over the ensuing years. In 2006 the entire urban area had a total count of 20 million trees!

Milton Keynes also has many entertainment venues, and a public art gallery. The ‘National Bowl’ has the capacity to hold 65000 people; it is a perfect venue for large, open air, events. The venue was opened in 1979, with performances by the great reggae artist, Desmond Dekker, and GenoWashington, the American R&B artist.

The ‘Milton Keynes Theatre’ opened in 1999; it has an interesting design feature in that the ceiling can be lowered, or raised, depending on the scale of the production. It also has the seating capacity for 1400. ‘The Stables’, a venue on the southeast edge of town holds an annual summer camp for young, aspiring musicians.

Milton Keynes is an ongoing project, aiming for city status. An exciting and innovative town, it certainly holds many opportunities.
