Moving to Newcastle?
Newcastle is surely most renowned for its wonderfully quirky ‘Geordie’ accent; that
and, Cheryl Cole, Newcastle Brown Ale, the Tyne Bridge, and Newcastle United F.C!!
The Geordie accent is incredibly distinctive, and has become one of the most popular
accents to have in the UK! It originates from the language spoken by anglo-saxon
mercenaries. There are so many examples we could be here all day! A few include;
‘house’ becomes ‘hoos’, and ‘cow’ becomes ‘coo’.
Officially called Newcastle upon Tyne – it is invariably shortened to simply Newcastle,
and is located in Tyne and Wear.
The city was built and developed on the banks of the River Tyne and on the site
of an original Roman Fort and settlement, known as ‘Pons Aelius’. This was located
on the eastern end of ‘Hadrian’s Wall’ – the infamous wall that was constructed
during the Roman Empire (started in AD 122) and spans the entire width of what is
now recognised as northern England! It is an architecturally complex city and still
retains much of its medieval street layout – narrow alleys that can only be accessed
by foot, especially around the riverside area.
A multi-cultural and diverse city, it is reputed to be a rather wild and fun-loving
place to be. This is evident in the number of nightclubs, bars and pubs that the
city has to offer, and in its thriving music scene. There are many fabulous restaurants
to be found – offering delights from many varying cultures, including, Thai, Vietnamese,
Italian, Mexican, and much more.
Newcastle can proudly boast a rich history in theatre, and also in poetry. One can
find plays and poetry-readings alike on most nights of the week! Festivals run throughout
the year, starting in February with the city’s Chinatown celebrating the Chinese
New Year.
Plans for the city currently include the idea to transform Newcastle into a science
city. The UK’s first biotechnology village is located close to the city centre.
The ‘Centre of Life’ is an educational charity that supports scientific research
and aims to enhance a greater interest and involvement in science.
A very sports dedicated city – there is a great deal going on in a multitude of
sporting activities, not least, football!
Newcastle is an exciting city with so much going on – you just have to go and see
for yourself!
