Moving to Newport?

Newport is a city in Wales, situated on the banks of the River Usk. It was granted city status in 2002 as part of Queen Elizabeth II’s Golden Jubilee celebrations. That same year during the construction of the Riverfront Arts Centre, a merchant ship was uncovered and subsequently rescued from the riverbanks. Known locally as the Newport Ship, it dates between 1445-1469, and is the oldest vessel of this type to have been found anywhere in the world! As yet, at least!

Newport has a long history, dating back easily to the Bronze Age. Some rather wonderful names appear during the late 5th Century; Newport Cathedral was once the site for St.Woolos Church, which was founded by Saint Gwynllyw, who also happened to be the King of Gwynllwg and later became the patron saint of Newport.

The arrival of the Industrial Revolution in the 19th Century brought much wealth and industry to the area, especially in the coal and iron industries. Both of these were transported down local rivers and newly built canals to ports, such as Newport. Newport Docks grew rapidly as a result, and by 1830 Newport was Wales’ leading coal port.

Newport is home to many prestigious buildings, including Tredgar House, a 17th Century Charles II mansion, that is regarded to be one of the finest in Britain. It is set in 90acres of parkland. In 1974 it was bought by the Council, which gives it its present recognition as being “the grandest council house in Britain”!!!

In the 1990s Newport had an explosion in the music scene, which led to the reports of the town being the new ‘Seattle’. It certainly has many clubs, bars and pubs. T.J’s an alternative music club is reputed to be the place where Kurt Cobain, of Nirvana, proposed to Courtney Love. The Newport Festival runs throughout the summer months, and stages many events all around the city.

The city is currently undergoing a massive regeneration and redevelopment, with many innovative projects in the works. An exciting and expanding city in which to live, work, or study.
