Moving to Norwich?

Norwich is a city in the county of Norfolk with a rich and important history. Norwich is no longer as important as it once was, its peak being during the 11th Century, but it certainly holds the evidence of its once major wealth, seen mainly in its architecture.

It was during the Middle Ages that Norwich become one of the main trading areas for wool. It was wool that made England rich, and much of it came from around Norwich. The wealth generated from the wool trade financed the construction of a great number of splendid churches.

Norwich has more medieval churches than any other city, north of the Alps, in Western Europe! At this time there were 57 churches (31 still exist) – this gave rise to the common regional saying that there was a church for every week of the year, and a pub for every day of the year! By the middle of the 14th Century the 4km long city walls had been completed. The downside to these walls was that it was now illegal to build outside of them, which obviously vastly inhibited the city’s growth. Sadly Norwich suffered extensive bombing during World War II. These bombings demolished large areas of the city’s old centre, and Victorian Terrace housing around the city.

Not just a city of antiquity and rich history, Norwich is also renowned for its shopping malls! In 2006 it was voted to be England’s 8th most prosperous shopping destination, due to its abundance in malls and variety of shops. The ancient market place, which was established by the Normans between 1071 and 1074, is England’s largest open-air market, open six-days-a-week.

Norwich is also home to Norwich University College of Arts, established in 1845, and just outside the city the University of East Anglia can be found. This university is well known for its creative writing programme – one of its graduates being Ian McEwan.

The city was home to the first arts festival, in 1772, and has subsequently enjoyed a long and healthy relationship with the arts. There are many arts festivals throughout the year.

Theatre is also very popular in Norwich, and there are a number of playhouses and theatres to choose from.

All in all the city of Norwich provides a rich cultural and historical experience, and is a wonderful place to live!
