In 1652 a 30ft circular artillery fort was built on the peninsula, Mount Batten Tower.

Due to its proximity to the sea, there are a number of water sport centres offering sailing, windsurfing, kayaking, and so on. The ‘Plymouth Summer Festival’ is an ongoing summer event that runs from May through to September; its events include live music, boat races, theatre entertainment, fireworks and much, much more.
