Moving to Reading?
Reading is a large town situated in Berkshire. It sits at the merging of two big
rivers, the River Kennet and the River Thames. It is not yet officially a city.
The town narrowly missed out in becoming a city in the year 2000, during the millennium
celebrations, when Brighton and Hove was granted city status.
Reading was an important area during the medieval period, due it being the site
of a monastery that held strong royal connections: This being Reading Abbey, which
was founded in 1121 by Henry I. The monastery has a colourful history; its last
Abbot, Hugh Cook Faringdon, was convicted of high treason in 1539, and hung, drawn
and quartered in front of the Abbey Church. In 1538, just prior to this gory event,
the Abbey was largely destroyed during the Dissolution of the Monasteries.
During the English Civil War (1642-1651), Reading changed hands a number of times,
and was the scene for much fighting and political dispute. Then just a few years
later, during the Revolution of 1668, it was the only site of significant fighting,
with the Second Battle of Reading taking place here. This grand historic event was
celebrated in Reading for hundreds of years afterwards.
Reading is not only a town with a prolific and interesting history; it is also home
to two popular universities and some great museums, galleries and theatres. It is
also a major shopping centre, with two large shopping malls.
Every year, Reading hosts the Reading Music Festival, which is one of the largest
music festivals in England. This is held on the Friday, Saturday and Sunday of August’s
bank holiday. The festival has been going since 1971, and remains one of the most
popular and attended of the festivals in England.
The town also has a few well-known names in its history; Kate Winslet was born and
raised in Reading, and Oscar Wilde was imprisoned in Reading Gaol from 1895-1897.
While Wilde was in the gaol he wrote his novel ‘De Profundis’.
Reading has much to offer to people from all walks of life, and is a great place
to call home.
