Moving to Sheffield?

The name ‘Sheffield’ derives, fairly obviously, from the River Sheaf, which is the river that flows through the city. One can find Sheffield in the rather beautiful South Yorkshire. Archaeological evidence proves that it has been an area of settlement since at least the late Upper Palaeolithic Period! The settlements, however, that were established, and then merged to become Sheffield, date back from the second half of the first millennium and are of Danish and Anglo-Saxon origin. After the Norman Conquest Sheffield Castle was built (started around 1270), its intention to protect the smaller, and local, settlements. Naturally a small town developed and it was this focal point that became the heart of the city we know today. The city’s main reputation has always primarily been for its industries in the production of steel and iron. For this reason it was targeted during the air bombing raids of World War II.

Sheffield has seen many changes in appearance over the years: the 1950s and 1960s saw many of the slum areas being demolished to make way for new housing schemes and new road systems. The face of the city is still changing with many projects underway to regenerate the city, especially the more rundown areas. The ‘Heart of the City Project’ is one such organisation that has initiated and completed many public works in the city centre, including the renovation of the Peace Gardens, in 1998. Interestingly, Sheffield has more trees per person than any other city in Europe! With over 170 woodlands, 78 parks and ten public gardens, and more, it means that the city is 61% greenspace! Very impressive!

Sheffield also has a long and prolific sporting heritage. In 1857 a group of cricketers formed the world’s first football club, Sheffield FC. It isn’t just football however, and the hosting of the World Student Games (in 1991) saw a number of sporting facilities being built, including the Don Valley Athletics Stadium, which is the largest athletics stadium in the UK.

Music features high on the list in Sheffield! Many bands have originated in the city, including Pulp, Joe Cocker and Def Leppard, and more recently the Arctic Monkeys.

There are many recreational activities and cultural activities in and around Sheffield. It would be hard to get bored here! Sheffield is an all-round exciting place to work and live.
