Moving to Southampton?

Southampton is the largest city in Hampshire, on the south coast of England. Inhabited since the Stone Age, it has a long and interesting history. Southampton has the longest surviving stretch of mediaeval wall in England, which is rather fabulous! It is the closest city to the New Forest; south east England’s largest remaining area of unenclosed forestland, heathland and pastureland. Horse riding, hiking and biking, are just a few of the activities on offer in the extensive and beautiful New Forest area.

Residents of Southampton are often referred to as ‘sotonians’, derived simply from the shortened spelling of Southampton, ‘So’ton’. One of Southampton’s most famous associations is with the ‘RHS Titanic’, which departed on its infamously ill-fated voyage from Southampton’s port. A third of those who died are reported to have been ‘Sotonians’. There is currently a project underway, in the city, to build a ‘Titanic’ Memorial Museum.

Southampton is still a major port, with ferry services to Europe. It has also been noted more recently for housing a number of the largest cruise ships in the world. Being located by the sea, many of the activities on offer in the city are water orientated. April through to September, the ‘Sea City’ takes place throughout Southampton. ‘Sea City’ was fundamentally created to celebrate the city’s links with the sea. The climax of this six-month celebration is the ‘Southampton Boat Show’. This is a week- long event with over 600 exhibitors, held at Mayflower Park, on the city’s waterfront.

The University of Southampton is ranked in the top 200 research universities in the world, and one of the top ten in the UK. It has a global reputation for its research into, amongst other subjects, oceanography, cancer sciences and engineering sciences.
