Moving to Swindon?

Swindon is a large town in the county of Wiltshire. Its residents are colloquially known as ‘Swindonians’.

Swindon was really just a small market town until the early 1800s, when the Industrial Revolution brought trade to the town and accelerated its growth. This came in the form, firstly, of canal construction, and then later railway line construction. The Wilts and Berks Canal was built in 1810, closely followed in 1819 by the North Wilts Canal. Both of these brought trade to the area and thus a significant increase in population.

Isambard Kingdom Brunel (a British civil engineer) proposed Swindon to be the site for the railway works planned for the Great Western Railway (the company that linked London with the south and south west of the country). Swindon was to be the junction for the planned railway line to Gloucester, and in 1842 Swindon Junction opened. The station has the first recorded railway refreshment rooms, opened because every train would stop for at least ten minutes to change locomotives.

The original old market town of Swindon stood atop a hill, this is now Central Swindon and the area is known still as Old Town. The increase in population inevitably caused a growth of the actual town. This newer town was built below the hill. Eventually, in 1900, the two towns merged, around the railway lines, to become one collective Swindon. Swindon is currently undergoing significant changes to regenerate the town centre and expand the town, especially to the north, and trying to improve the town’s regional status.

The town is home to an admirable collection of art galleries, museums, music venues and also some great comedy venues. The shopping centres are well established and have everything one could possibly want in way of retail therapy!

Swindon hosts the annual ‘Swindon Festival of Literature’ – a well-known and much visited festival. The annual ‘Swindon Mela’ is a celebration of South Indian arts and culture. This particular all-day festival attracts up to 10,000 people every year!

Swindon is a great town with many opportunities and much to offer anyone who chooses to live, work, or study there.
