Moving to Watford?

Watford, for most of its early history, was a bustling farming community, and like so many other towns of similar size and status it was the Industrial Revolution that stimulated its growth. The Grand Union Canal (in 1798) and the London and Birmingham Railway (in 1837) both sought easy gradient across the Chiltern Hills and hence passed through, or around, Watford using locally owned land. The arrival of both of these inevitably propelled the town’s growth with its consequential accessibility.

Watford is actually the only major regional centre in Hertfordshire, and indeed is a major regional centre for the northern Home Counties. The Harlequin Shopping Centre is the largest shopping mall in the area. It is an indoor mall with a multitude of shops, cafes and restaurants, and is used by many of the neighbouring townspeople.

Watford F.C is a professional football team with a high-profile celebrity supporter, who was actually was once a club chairman, and now holds the title of Honorary Life President – The one and only Elton John!

Watford has some interesting landmarks; possibly the most famous of these is the Watford Colosseum, which is currently under plans to receive a major face-lift. It is holds an international reputation for having incredible acoustic qualities, and it is for this reason that the audio recordings for The Lord of the Rings, the Sound of Music and the Star Wars series, were recorded here! It has also, in the past, been the venue for some big-name music artists, such as The Who, and Robbie Williams. The town has two popular theatres, the Watford Palace Theatre, and the Pump House Theatre and Arts Centre. The latter hosts some fabulous activities organised by local community groups; these include, children’s ballet and Morris dancing for women!

There is more to Watford than meets the eye! Full of opportunity and with plenty to keep oneself occupied, it really would be a great place to call home.
