Moving to West Browmwich?

The town was originally known as Broomwich Heath, and was actually mentioned in the Domesday Book. The name literally meant ‘the little village on the heath of broom’. It wasn’t until the early 19th Century, during the Industrial Revolution, that it took on the name West Bromwich.

Its progression from village to town began in 1727 when it became a regular stopping point on the coach road from Shrewsbury to London. Coal deposits were discovered a mile west of Broomwich Heath in the early 19th Century, which inevitably accelerated the growth of the town, and it grew rapidly into an industrial area. It was also now, with the development of the ‘new’ town, around where the coal was found, that it took on the name of West Bromwich. It is recognised to be a part of the Black Country, due to the West Midlands being one of the most heavily industrialised areas in the country during the Industrial Revolution; although there is some evidence that the name existed before then, as a result of coal deposits being so near to the surface they stained the soil black in areas throughout the region.

In 1974 West Bromwich was joined with eight other local towns to form the Metropolitan Borough of Sandwell, of which it is the largest town. It is probably most famous for its football club, West Bromwich Albion. Workmen from George Salter’s Spring Works joined forces to form the club in 1878. The club notably has won a grand total of five FA Cups! The football ground that they currently use, The Hawthorns, is 168metres above sea level, making it the highest football ground in the country!
